ENVIRONMENT

TO MOVE & BE MOVED

We are an activewear company with environmental causes at the heart of everything we do.

Fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world and we are driven by the desire to inspire lasting change in the way clothing is produced. As a Kosmos customer, we know it’s important to you to understand exactly how your clothing is made. In addition, it’s equally important to know how the brands you choose to invest in are working to reduce or even eradicate their carbon footprint. This is why we target complete transparency, to provide you with all the information you need to feel confident in your decision to choose us.

OCEAN CONSERVATION

In order to work towards improving the environment of our oceans, we choose to make our clothing from regenerated fishing nets and post consumer waste. Each year over 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets and gear are discarded into our oceans, but this can all be reused and made into high quality materials. In recycling this waste, we can have a positive impact on the environment of our seas, turning a problem into a solution.

We also choose to support Healthy Seas - the environmental initiative that works to clean up our oceans - by giving a percentage of every sale to support the work that their divers do.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

Petroleum-based products are detrimental to the environment on many levels. While not typically widely known, virgin nylon and other synthetic fabrics contain petroleum, which contributes to air pollution, various illnesses and fuels climate change. The use of petroleum is not required in the making of our recycled fabric. This means we work towards lowering the demand of oil extraction as well as reducing our own carbon footprint.

Synthetic fibres produced from petroleum such as polyester and nylon pose a further significant risk to the environment because they are non-biodegradable. 84% of unwanted clothes in the United States in 2012 went into either landfill or an incinerator, causing further pollution. Our fabric is infinitely recyclable so there is never any need for landfill.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Since the industrial revolution, making clothing has been having a negative impact on our environment, contributing towards climate change both via the use of fossil fuels in fabric and at production level. We choose to be different, by manufacturing locally, producing our garments in buildings that are powered by renewable energy sources and drawing on existing resources to make our fabrics.

At this crucial time, we need to choose alternative options when it comes to producing clothing. We choose to create each and every garment in a way that ensures there is minimal pressure put on our planet, and where possible actually works towards having a positive impact on the environment.

Our planet is at the heart of all that we do and you can support our journey. We can work together to create a better future, all we have to do is start with our daily lifestyle choices and inspire others to do the same.

ETHICS

People are part of our environment and we use ethical practices in the manufacture of our activewear. On 24 April 2013, the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed. 1,138 people died and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. There were five garment factories in Rana Plaza all manufacturing clothing for big global brands. The victims were mostly young women. We don’t want our clothes to exploit people or damage the planet. This is why we choose to design and make our clothing in London UK in an ethical fashion factory where the staff are extremely well taken care of, paid fair wages and work in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
