Update Your Before-You-Leave Checklist

Update Your Before-You-Leave Checklist

November 03, 2019

The environmental impact of plastic bags, disposable cups and plastic bottles has become common knowledge over the past few years, and we’re definitely heading in the right direction to combat their use. However, many people continue to use them, despite loads of portable and reusable versions being available.

It’s rare to leave the house without your phone, keys or purse. Add a coffee cup, water bottle and bag to that list to make sure you're never forced to use disposable items when you’re out and about...

Here's what we recommend

If you’re looking for a reusable coffee cup, rCup is our favourite. rCups are made from used paper coffee cups, so their manufacture reduces the number of disposable cups that end up in landfill. They’re great because they keep your drink warm for ages (apparently over 90 minutes, but our coffee never makes it that far!), and they’re leak-proof, so you can leave your cup in your bag worry-free once you’re done with your coffee.

For a portable bottle to support your sustainable lifestyle, our 600ml Kosmos water bottles are the perfect eco-friendly option. Made from stainless steel and featuring a bamboo lid, our bottles will keep your drink hot or cold for up to 8 hours.

If you’re running low on water, you can then use the refill app to find your nearest water refill station.

The perfect secondary bag is one that will fold down flat inside your bag, yet will fit in a lot of fruit and veg from your impromptu visit to the market. Based on this criteria, the striped jute bag from Turtle Bags gets our vote.

Turtle Bags was established to raise awareness of the hazards of plastic bags, and this bag is hand-woven from natural jute as part of a Bangladeshi Women’s empowerment programme. It’s strong, roomy, and can be wiped clean from any dirt.

It's changing little habits, like adding these items to your before-you-leave checklist, that will help minimise your individual carbon footprint. And if a lot of people are minimising their individual carbon footprint, this will lead to a big change in our society’s carbon footprint, which – needless to say – would be a very good thing.

So, as you’re leaving the house in future, think: phone, keys, purse… coffee cup, bottle and bag!
